A scented candle is a heat-producing product whose wax, wick, fragrance, dye, vessel and process must work together. Attractive cold throw is not a release criterion. Development needs repeatable making conditions, full burn observations, packaging review and a specification tied to the tested combination.
Choose the vessel before final wick work
Record internal diameter, shape, material, wall variation, finish and supplier reference. Vessel geometry affects melt-pool development and heat. Inspect production samples for cracks, inclusions and dimensional variation. A visually similar replacement vessel can change burn behaviour enough to require renewed testing.
Build a controlled formula
State wax blend, fragrance code and dose convention, dye, additive, pour conditions and cure period. Check the wax supplier's guidance and relevant fragrance documentation, but validate the finished candle. Raising fragrance load can affect incorporation, surface, flame, soot and vessel heat without improving hot throw.
Select the wick through testing
Compare candidate wick series and sizes in the intended formula and vessel. Record flame height, visible smoke, mushrooming, melt pool, remaining wall wax and self-extinguishing behaviour through repeated cycles. Test multiple units because one handmade sample cannot represent production variation.
Separate scent from safety observations
Score cold throw after a defined cure and hot throw in a documented room, but keep these scores separate from burn acceptance. A strong scent does not compensate for an unstable flame. Note trim length, burn interval and room conditions so results can be repeated rather than remembered.
Release the complete product
Review warning label, use instructions, lid or dust cover, carton, transit protection and fill-weight control. Retain tested units and production records. Changes to wax, wick, fragrance, vessel, dye, process or fill should enter change control and reopen the tests affected by that variable.
