The Signature Scent Development Process

Signature scent development turns brand language into an olfactive reference that can be manufactured repeatedly. The process needs a narrow brief, controlled comparisons, useful revision feedback and a final sample in the intended product base. More options do not necessarily produce a clearer decision.

Translate identity into sensory constraints

Describe audience, place, use occasion, emotional direction and what the fragrance must avoid. Replace vague adjectives with contrasts: dry rather than sweet, quiet rather than diffusive, mineral rather than aquatic. Include target product, concentration, market, cost and regulatory constraints in the same brief.

Start with distinct directions

Request a small set of concepts that answer the brief in visibly different ways. Each direction should have a short rationale, code and formula revision. Avoid mixing feedback from ten similar samples; three contrasting routes reveal whether the brief or the execution needs adjustment.

Evaluate in stages

Smell blotters blind, then assess finalists on skin or in the intended room, wax or diffuser base. Record opening, heart, dry-down, diffusion and fit at fixed intervals. Use more than one evaluator from the target context, but separate preference from compliance with the agreed brief.

Write actionable revision feedback

Identify the sample code, observation time, desired change and elements to preserve. “Less sweet after two hours while keeping the green opening” is more useful than “make it luxurious.” Consolidate comments through one decision owner so the perfumer does not receive contradictory instructions.

Lock the production reference

Approve the fragrance in its actual concentration and carrier, then complete relevant stability, compatibility and performance work. Retain coded samples under controlled storage and connect them to the formula and batch specification. Extensions into candles or diffusers require new evaluation because the same compound behaves differently by base.
