A reed diffuser is a controlled evaporation system. Fragrance, carrier base, reed material, reed count, neck geometry, room conditions and bottle stability all influence throw and consumption. Product development should therefore compare complete systems rather than selecting a high fragrance percentage in isolation.
Define the intended room and use pattern
State the room size, ventilation, temperature range, desired intensity and expected user behaviour. A diffuser designed for a hotel bathroom is not evaluated like one for an open-plan lobby. Set separate targets for perceived throw, liquid-use rate and acceptable lifetime instead of promising one universal duration.
Develop the liquid as a system
Evaluate fragrance compatibility with the selected base at realistic temperatures and over time. Record clarity, colour, sediment, odour change and evaporation. Fragrance load alone does not determine performance; a heavier composition may need different reeds or neck exposure to move effectively.
Match reeds and bottle geometry
Specify reed material, dimensions, count and supplier reference. Measure bottle neck opening and fill level because exposed liquid surface and capillary path affect delivery. Compare one variable at a time. More reeds can increase early intensity while shortening useful life and raising spill risk during setup.
Test in saleable packaging
Run stability, leakage, transport and material-compatibility checks with the actual bottle, closure, plug, decoration and label. Observe staining or lifting around the neck and base. Confirm that the consumer can remove the transit closure safely and that instructions explain reed placement, turning and surface protection.
Create a performance record
Weigh test units at fixed intervals and score scent at defined distances under recorded room conditions. Retain the formula, component codes and approved sample together. A change to base, fragrance, reeds, neck, fill or instructions should trigger the relevant comparison before a reorder is released.
